What is the best model for running my association? The answer is — it depends!
There are various ways to manage an association. The trick is to match the model to your association.
The four primary approaches are:
- Volunteer Managed
Overview: Everything about running the organization is done by volunteers.
This model is best for organizations with limited budgets, and a level of volunteer engagement.
Pro: Eliminates staffing costs
Con: Burns out volunteers
- Solo Executive Director
The Executive Director does all the management work personally.
Overview: For a very small association, with a limited budget and few technology needs, this can be a reasonable option.
Pro: One contact person
Con: Requires diversified skill set; pay at Executive rate for all levels of work
- Association Management Company (AMC)
The Association Management Company model works well for organizations wanting to hold costs down, while still having access to a high level of expertise.
Overview: AMCs take advantage of economies of scale and shared expertise.
Pros: Cost-effective, access to skilled professionals, best practices counseling
Cons: Share staff with other associations
- Stand-alone (Captive Staff))
The Executive Director/CEO and a full complement of employees, likely in dedicated office space, with a strong financial position.
Overview: This model is well suited for large organizations with the financial resources to support the cost of full-time management, administrative support, specialized services and more.
Pro: Able to operate effectively, with access to all needed resources
Con: Expensive, with potential for bureaucracy
