The Six Systems Approach

To better fit Next Wave Group’s structure and core values, Pat Troy developed the Six Systems operating model. Six interfacing systems (Governance, Finance, Membership Communications, Programs and Events) drive the model.

The Six Systems approach is a way to structure, optimize, and measure association operations. Association management naturally breaks down into six functional areas: governance, finance, membership, communications, programs
and events.

Each of these areas becomes a system, whether the work is done by staff or volunteers. While the staff may do many tasks in each system, volunteers may also work within these systems.

HOW IT WORKS
The building blocks of each system are
tasks, each of which can be ascribed to a system. Some tasks are clerical, while others are executive and everywhere in between. Tasks may be sequential, clustered, or freestanding.

By breaking work down to its tasks, its basic elements, it is possible to assimilate workflows, projects, and executive functions. With this information, it is possible to define each system.
