Top 10 tips for the new Board treasurer

  1. Review the financial statements and be sure that you understand them. If you don’t, ask questions.
  2. Set up a meeting with the outgoing treasurer and ask them for any guidance and update on pending matters.
  3. Meet with your accounting department contact, exchanging information and talking about the pertinent issues.
  4. Review the budget and ask questions of those who prepared it.
  5. Ask to see a copy of the internal controls document or guidelines for operations related to accounting.
  6. Ask to have a copy of the most recent 990 tax return. 
  7. Confirm that the organization is in good standing with the state. This can be done online.
  8. Ask to see a copy of the IRS tax letter as well as the articles of incorporation and bylaws.
  9. Review the reporting cycle with the executive director and or accounting contact
  10. Be sure that you are a signatory on the checking account as well as any investment account assuming this is in line with your organization’s operating procedures.
